Learn how to make a fondant baby chick from pastry chef Angela Cuervo, winner of Food Network’s Sweet Genius, in this Howcast video.
So now I’m going to show you how to make a little baby chick. I just take some yellow fondant. I’m going to roll it in some corn starch so it’s not too sticky. Roll it into a golf ball-sized piece. Now I’m going to take it and I’m going to take the top and just roll it around my fingers so that we can make his little head, and then we’re going to pinch it a little bit at the top, like that, so he has a little beak.
Now I’m going to take the back and I’m going to pinch out, so he has a cute little back. And then at the sides I’m going to take it and I’m going to pinch it again so we can make his little wings, and then pinch back. And I’m going to do it again to the other side, and also pinch back. Now what I’m going to do is take a small ball tool and make dents at the top for his eyes. For his eyes I’m going to use white pearls and then just add some water and just place them in the dents we just made.
Now I’m going to take some orange fondant and I’m going to make his beak. So I’m going to roll it in some corn starch so it’s not too sticky. I’m going to take a little piece and we’re going to make it into a triangle shape, and then I’m going to flatten it a little bit, so I have a little triangle. Then just make it rounded on the inside, so I have a little triangle shape for his beak. Then I’m going to add some water to the front and I’m going to place his cute little beak right there in the front. I’m going to let him dry over night and then the little chick is ready in the morning to decorate your cake.
